Victorian Schools Mountain Bike Championship – Rounds 2 and 3

Our students in the Human Powered Vehicle (HPV) & Cycling Squad have been actively involved in the Victorian Schools Mountain Bike Championship over the last month.

Round 2 was held at Lysterfield at the end of July and the squad had 14 riders compete. The squad came away with 6 medals (3 gold and 3 bronze) and 9 placings in the top 50% of the categories entered! Representing the Senior School, Phoebe Thompson (Year 9) and Susanna Bates (Year 11) won their respective age groups receiving gold medals. Adele Hanley (Year 8) rode a very strong race to finish third in her event to claim a bronze medal.

Round 3 of the Series was held at the You Yangs last Sunday. SMS/BGS had 12 students compete in the event under beautiful blue skies. Our riders rode fast on the flowing mountain bike course and came away with 7 medals (4 gold, 2 silver and a bronze).

Phoebe Thompson and Nicole McClary (Year 12) earned gold medals in their respective age categories and Makenzie Betts (Year 10) had a great ride to earn second spot in her category and a silver medal after an extended period off the bike through injury.

In both Rounds 2 and 3, every SMS student has finished on the podium. No other school has been able to achieve the same feet in this series so far.

Congratulations must go to the girls for their commitment to their training in order to achieve these great results!
