VCE Geography excursion

Unit 3 Geographers visited the Docklands precinct of inner Melbourne on 21 February. The focus of the trip was the change to land use that has occurred in the region over the last twenty years or so. Once described as an ‘urban blight’ and a ‘derelict wasteland’ it is now home to more than 11,000 people. The area also hosts 25,000 workers every week day and the region is the second most productive in the country, after Perth’s CBD. The students visited the Development Victoria headquarters in Exhibition Street, then caught a tram to Southern Cross Station. Visits to Etihad Stadium, NAB and Victoria Harbour followed but for many students the highlight was a visit to Docklands Park. Once home to the West Melbourne Gasworks it is now a large open space with many residents (and a few visiting students) enjoying facilities such as basketball courts and playgrounds.
