Reading Hour – Taking the Time

In a week in which Reading Ruled, Thursday’s celebration of ‘Reading Hour’ was one of the highlights.

Reading Hour encouraged us all to put an hour aside of our day to read.  And what could be better?  There are so many positives to reading.

A survey of Year 8 students shows that they recognize the benefits of reading to include:

  • Relaxation
  • Imagination and Creativity
  • Gets you off screens and helps you sleep better
  • Helps your spelling, grammar and vocabulary
  • Helps you learn about the world
  • Develops emotional literacy

So many staff and students ignored even the beautiful sunshine outside to enjoy a quiet lunchtime of reading, hot chocolate and marshmallows.  Boys compared books – School Captain Darcy Dillon asked all the younger boys what they were reading, and Archer Reed introduced some of the older boys to a book version of the webcomic ‘Homestuck’.

Although we didn’t get the full hour in, we made a good start and the boys all pledged to make up the extra 15 minutes at home.
