One World Robotic Competition

St Margaret’s and Berwick Grammar School participated in the One World Robotic Competition, organised by Actura, at Caulfield Grammar School in early December. Our team consisted of: Sarah O’Connor, Muyu Li, Kyra Lim, Annabel Wu from SMS and Chelaka Ranatunga, Karthik Kalaiselvan from BGS.

Students participated Future Skills Demonstration Challenge, Smart City Solution Presentation Challenge and Robotic Technical Challenge. Our girls and boys formed one team and demonstrated high level of resilience, collaboration and dedication in the entire process.

They were ranked 1^st place in Robotic Technical Challenge and 1^st place in total score of all three challenges among six private schools attended. Students will receive an invitation to participate next round of competition in Sydney next year.

Year 8 student, Sarah O’Connor reflections on the experience: “The 2019, One World Robotics Competition was a surreal experience for both my team and myself. We formed new friendships during our time spent preparing for the competition and further strengthened these bonds on the competition weekend, collaborating on challenges and trialling physics experiments. This experience was an excellent opportunity to learn, practice and improve our computing skills using the newest resources, whilst also demonstrating our passion and talents for robotics to companies such as Fizzics and Actura. The competition presented us with new challenges that related to real world problems, encouraging us to work as a team to find creative and inventive solutions. Together, we explored the idea of smart cities and the problems that come with them, as well as how the concept of self-driving cars would function in a society such as smart cities. This event has revealed to us, the vital role that robotics and computing plays in the future and how we can be involved in this. After winning first place overall, we were invited to take part in the 2020 Global One World Robotics Competition in Sydney.”
