The Somers Early Learning Centre is the gateway to St Margaret’s School and caters for children between the ages of 3 years (minimum) and 5 years of age. The children attend from 8.30am until 3.00pm for 2 to 5 days in the 3 year old program and 3 to 5 days in the four year program and participate in some specialist sessions.
The Literacy program in Prep to Year 2 is a high priority area, knowing that the skills and concepts developed during classroom programs underpin learning across the whole curriculum. It aims to develop the students’ ability to speak, listen, read and write with enjoyment, purpose and confidence.
Numeracy provides students with a sense of logic and a means by which they can organise the world around them. Students are encouraged to explore and experience activities that relate to different areas of Mathematics: number, space, measurement, chance and data and mathematical tools and procedures.
In Years 3 and 4 students build on the speaking, listening, reading and writing skills of previous years. Oral communication is a strong component of the programs offered at this level, with children encouraged to organise their thoughts and ideas and make presentations in a confident manner to others. Learning to be critical listeners is an important part of this area.
The Year 3 – 4 Mathematics program addresses the areas of Space, Number, Measurement, Chance and Data and Reasoning and Strategies. The students are taught mathematical concepts in meaningful contexts and their understanding is enriched through hands-on activities, using and exploring concrete materials and involvement in games.
In Years 5 and 6 students extend their abilities and interest in Language through integrated activities which provide an authentic purpose for the skills and processes necessary for good communication. Students are encouraged to take an active role in evaluating their strengths and needs, seeking assistance and celebrating their successes.
Students in Years 5 and 6 consolidate their knowledge of number skills and tables and extend their understanding of place value from thousandths to millions.
For the last decade St Margaret’s has been a leading school in the field of educational technology, through its innovative laptop program which operates from Years 5-12. The impact of this program upon student learning has been substantial, with great gains being evident in many areas. Most importantly, our students are confident users of technology and their independent learning skills have been greatly supported by their access to the range of thinking tools that a Tablet PC computer provides.
