Welcome Back- remember to turn on the light

Welcome Back

It was heartwarming to witness the awakening of our heritage buildings by the laughter of our girls as they returned to school. The seniors paved the way and offered reassurance and advice to the middle school girls, via our Tuesday assembly broadcast. This was a ‘sense of belonging’ in action- each girl looking out for the other, wishing success upon the other and being valued for her contribution.

I could not be more proud of our community as we courageously navigated what many have called dark or uncertain times.

Research tells us that two emotions prevail during times of uncertainty- anxiety and fear. As a precaution, our brains are wired to focus on the worst-case scenario, to prepare us for fight or flight. The knowledge and skills taught through the Empower program has been pivotal, in equipping our children to refocus and acknowledge that they are equipped with all they need, to cope with anything life throws their way.

“They are not their thoughts, but observers of their thoughts’’ (Twelve Days of Positive Psychology; Michael Car-Greg 2020)

The Empower program teaches our children to not board a bus of doom and gloom but rather get on the bus, which focusses on, the first responders, on charitable actions, and the positives that this pandemic has brought to the forefront.

As we navigate the ups and downs of life, the joys, successes, contributions and the disappointments, difficulties and tragedies- the hope is that these skills will be continually embedded in our children and even further to the fabric of our school community.

Now that we have returned to this ‘new’ normal, it is imperative that we remain vigilant and continue to grow in Courage, Curiosity, Character and Respect. In the words of Dumbledore-

“Happiness can be found in the darkest of times if one only remembers to turn on the light’’.

Let us continue to grow in the light, alongside one another, as proud members of this fabulous community.

With gratitude,
