SIS MUSIC

This year’s Southern Independent School’s Music Festival evening was held at the Drum Theatre in Dandenong on Tuesday 22 March. Over 30 boys from Years 7-11 participated in 3 days of rehearsals in preparation for the concert. The combined ensembles this year were Senior and Junior Concert Bands and Choir which were directed by teachers from the various schools. The boys not only gained skills in playing and singing music but also new and old friendship were formed with musicians from other schools. This year the Senior Concert Band consisted of students with 3 years and above playing experience, which meant they were able to attempt more challenging repertoire. For many of the Year 7 and 8 boys it was their first year of participation in the SIS Junior Concert Band, whilst the Combined Schools Choir involved boys from Year 7 to 10.

This year the VCE ensemble represented Berwick Grammar School in the individual school item for the program. The group performed a contemporary song Use Somebody by The Kings of Leon. Their performance featured our two senior vocalists: Connor Boothman and Pavan Mallawarachchi, guitarists: Dylan Girotto and Sean Dack and drummer: David Somers. The boys performed in a professional manner and gave a thoroughly entertaining performance.

Thanks to Ms Anneliese Muller who supported and encouraged the boys, whilst playing in the Junior Concert Band as well. Overall it was a fantastic experience for all those boys involved. The chance to play music for three solid days has helped them to develop their instrumental/vocal skills and build friendships with other musicians.
