SIS Debating Grand Final

The SIS Debating Grand Final was held at Berwick Grammar School on Thursday 10 October.

Congratulations to the Senior SIS Debating Team (Oliver Ward, Max Walton Briggs, James Agahi and Trent Mitchell) for winning the Senior Division of this competition.

The boys did incredibly well to secure victory against Casey Grammar by one point, debating against the notion that ‘prisons should be replaced by home arrest and ankle monitoring.’

This achievement comes off the back of many years of trying and falling just shy of victory. The boys have shown a lot of resilience in bouncing back and trying time and again, so it was fantastic to see their efforts finally pay off.

Our Intermediate team (Sebastian Nugara, Ovin Jayawardana, Gathika Withanage and David Guzenko) unfortunately lost by one point to SFX, but still did very well to reach that stage of the competition. With any luck, next year will be their year.

With this being the final formal debate on our school calendar for 2019, all students participating in the program are congratulated on their efforts and successes throughout the year. All our boys are encouraged to sign up to take part next year.

We would also like to take this opportunity to thank our student Enrichment Leaders, who have done a fantastic job of growing the debating culture at Berwick Grammar. We would also like to thank all the staff and students who have attended debating events to show their support throughout the year.
