Rugby journey

Rugby has taken St Margaret’s Junior School by storm this term, and that’s exactly where the Year 6 students had their debut– the Melbourne Storm Half Time game at AAMI Park.

Our rugby journey began in early August when a National Rugby League (NRL) coach came to teach students from Year 3 to 6 all about the incredible game. The PE department was thrilled to introduce this new and exciting opportunity as many students had never participated in such a sport.

Students from Year 5 and 6 were invited to further pursue their interest by trialing out for the Rugby 9‘s Gala Days held in Pakenham and Frankston. Forty-one students were selected to represent St Margaret’s School in both tackle and touch teams. Students were taught how to defend, tackle, pass and dodge; and it was clear that our St Margaret’s girls did not hold back on their opponents. The day was filled with fun and excitement, and our teams had plenty of success scoring multiple tries throughout the day.

A special mention to the lucky nine students who played in front of 25,000 people at the Melbourne Storm Half Time game. Rugby has taken the students on a wonderful journey, teaching the students different game skills and team work. And I am proud to say that St Margaret’s Junior School hosts an excellent rugby side.
