Royal Botanic Gardens – Year 6 Excursion

As part of our recent PYP unit of inquiry, Where we are in Place and Time, the Year 6 boys and girls travelled to the Royal Botanic Gardens, Melbourne to participate in a wonderful program, Connecting to Country.

The program began with participation in a traditional Aboriginal smoking ceremony. It was interesting gaining an understanding of the significance of the individual foliage burned during this ceremony. They explored some very interesting Aboriginal artefacts, discussed how Aboriginal arts have evolved, made some ochre paint and explored many of the edible indigenous plants located in the Royal Botanic Gardens. This was particularly interesting and provided a unique opportunity for the students to sample some of the culinary delights. This excursion provided everyone with a greater understanding and respect for Aboriginal culture, particularly of the local Koolin.
