Principal Welcome to 2020 – 13 February 2020

Dear St Margaret’s and Berwick Grammar Community

It has been a busy start to the year. For many the break was filled with joy while others faced challenges related to our bushfires and or issues concerning the novel Coronavirus. I am always struck by the haven schools become in such times. Families and children often turn to institutions such as schools as they promise routine, clear expectations and sanctuary. The staff have been very conscious that the young people in our care are supported as appropriately as possible. Staff have undergone extra training in relation to recognising and dealing with possible increased levels of student anxiety. We extend such opportunities to the parents as well and will be running two events that may be of interest: The first of the Principal’s Morning Teas on Tuesday 25 February at SMS will focus on dealing with Anxiety in our Children and how to manage it. The first Unicorn Series on Thursday 19 March will also look at anxiety in young people and share current research and suggestions in this area. As mentioned in my start of term letter, should any families have particular concerns please feel free to contact the School, as we may be able to help. I also refer you to my 2020 welcome letter, which linked to a number of resources and included:

  • Parent line – phone 13 22 89
  • Kids Helpline – phone 1800 55 1800 (up to 18yrs)
  • For additional support, contact your doctor, mental health professional, Lifeline (13 11 14)

We welcomed well over 120 new students to our school this year. Both the boys’ campus and the girls’ campus have grown this year as we welcomed students from around the globe. I have met many of the new parents and I am greatly looking forward to meeting you all at the Parents’ Cocktail Evening on Friday 21 February from 6.30pm to 9.00pm. It is usually a delightful evening and I encourage you all to come and engage with our beautiful community. The evening is kindly sponsored by Noone Imagewear and is free for all parents, we just ask you to register for catering purposes at www.trybooking.com/594509.
