National History Challenge

Year 10 Berwick Grammar School student, Max Walton Briggs, has made it into the top three State entries for his essay category in the 2018 National History Challenge (NHC). The NHC is a research-based competition, organised by the History Teachers Association of Victoria, which encourages students to investigate their community or explore their roots.

His essay explored the history of fire management practices throughout our local history, which was a unique response to this year’s theme and essay prompt: “turning points.”

Max’s entry has now been sent to Canberra for National judging to determine State and National winners.

To get this far, Max had to be shortlisted from all of the entries in the state. He then had to have his essay judged by a panel of four adjudicators, who asked him follow up questions about his understanding of the topic and the wider implications of what his essay discussed.

Max is congratulated on this exceptional achievement, and is wished the best of luck as he waits to hear news from Canberra.
