House Athletics

The House Athletics Carnival for 2018 was held under blue skies but frosty underfoot. Shae Jones (Year 11) impressively took out the first race of the day, the Open 100m Championship. The competition then began in earnest for all SMS girls, with the best from each House competing for both their age group event title and selection in the GSV Athletics team.

Outstanding performances on the day included: Amy Herbert (ear 10) who ran the fastest 800m race, Shae Jones (Year 11) the fastest 400m, Caitlyn Bromley (Year 7) who scored the highest amount of points from field events and Sophie Castricum (Year 9) the highest points tally from track events. The winning House overall was Gipson, whilst Cunningham were judged to be the most highly spirited House.

Also announced at the completion of the event was Gipson as the winner of our Athletics Standards afternoon, held earlier in the term. The student who scored the highest tally of points at Standards was Claudia Eibl (Year 8) from Cunningham, with an incredible total of 40 points, 8 clear of her nearest rival.

Special thanks must go to the SMS Senior School teachers and ground staff for expertly setting up the facilities for the day and ensuring a smoothly run and enjoyable event for all those involved.

Well done also to the House Captains Alina Ermolaeva and Susie Bates from Cunningham, Jemmah Nathanielsz and Nazia Ayubsha from Gipson and Brooke Stanton and Siahny Fraser from Campbell for leading their Houses enthusiastically and capably throughout the whole carnival.

This term we have the last of the House events which contribute to the 2018 House Cup; Middle School Winter Sport, Middle School debating and our House Extravaganza Finale.
