Head of Campus Update – 28 March 2018

It has been a pleasure to spend time with our students during the past couple of weeks and I have been reminded of the importance of listening to and caring for each other. I attended the Casey Students Leaders Reception with our Year 6 and Year 12 School Captains and was amazed and inspired by the opinions and actions of our young people within the City of Casey. The focus this year was recognising personal passions and interests, showing initiative and taking action to help others. As a result, students were reminded that they not only help others during this process but learn more about themselves on a deeper level. Local students have successfully introduced breakfast clubs, overseas cultural experiences, charity support initiatives and youth programs within their school and community.  Each student believed in their own power to change someone’s life by helping others to reach their full potential through wellness, change and a positive attitude.  This is of particular interest to me as we have recently introduced a more focussed approach of ‘service to others’ in the Junior School. I look forward to working with staff and students during term 2 as we develop and action plans that help us decide what we want to do and who we want to be. To quote words from the Reception – Be Proud. Be True. Be You.

I was also delighted with the response from our Year 6 students in becoming our 2018 Peer Mediators. At our recent training session, I was impressed with the level of maturity, compassion and insight of our young leaders. This is an important student leadership role within Junior School as it not only promotes a positive, caring, safe and friendly playground environment for everyone but also develops the listening skills, problem solving strategies and confidence of our Year 6 students. The program will commence in Term 2 and the peer mediators will easily be identified in the playground by their bright orange caps and welcoming smiles.

I hope all families find the time to relax and enjoy time with the people who matter most during the two week break. I look forward to seeing everyone back at school on Tuesday 17 April. Happy holidays everyone.
