Getting The Year Started with DEAR

Readers are leaders at Berwick Grammar School, and new members of our community may not be aware of our Friday morning ritual of Dropping Everything and taking the time to read.

Reading is not only wonderful for boys literacy skills, but also their emotional skills.  When we read, we encounter problems and watch characters solve them.  We watch them face challenges with bravery.  We find role models that shape the kind of person we want to be.

Adopting this habit lets the boys know how much we value reading.  And we are always talking about books at Berwick Grammar School.  Assembly is one of the key spaces in which we do this – either my discussing a relevant lesson from a book, or simply by the act of displaying the book the speaker is reading on the PowerPoint.

This week we also invited boys to take part in a book club where by we would read Angela Duckworth’s ‘Grit’ to tie in with Grit as our wellbeing theme for Term 1.  Interested students can email Ms Cook to secure their place in the group.
