Debating Program

Although 2017 was a significant year for the Berwick Grammar School Debating Program, 2018 looks set to be much bigger. In just a few short years, our school’s debating culture has grown rapidly. Currently, an extraordinary 26.5% of our students are signed-up to participate in this increasingly successful program.

Last year we reached the grand final in the SIS Debating Competition, while flooding the competition at the semi-finals. One of our C Grade teams also contested the semi-finals in the DAV competition. In his crowning achievement, Year 12 Enrichment Captain Kaelan Dekker won a Swannie, awarded exclusively to the speaker from each DAV region with the highest average score.

This year the boys will be led by our Year 12 Enrichment Captain; Kaelan Dekker, Year 11 Enrichment Captain; James Agahi, and our Intermediate Enrichment Captain; Oliver Ward. These outstanding leaders are aiming for great things, having already contributed significantly to refining and improving how we run our training sessions. They are also responsible for implementing a formal peer mentoring system for the first time.

We wish all our debaters the best of luck and success, and have no doubt that they will make Berwick Grammar School proud.
