Books at Assembly

Those of you who have attended a recent assembly might have noticed our latest strategy to promote boys and literacy.  With Dr Middleton now sharing his reading so readily with the boys – Jocko Willink’s Discipline Equals Freedom Field Manual and The Energy Bus by Jon Gordon in recent weeks – we now feature the reading material of each of the speakers.

Ms Rome was reading a popular fiction novel City of Crows by Chris Woomersley when she came to speak about International Women’s Day.  Social Service and Battye House Captain promoted a fantasy favourite, Christopher Paolini’s Eragon, while Year 11 Captain and Duke of Edinburgh Silver Award Winner Darcy Dillon provided boys with a lot of food for thought with his choices in the past two weeks.  He was reading two thought-provoking titles; Michael Punke’s powerful novel, The Revenant and Yuval Noah Harari’s Sapiens – A Brief History of Humankind.  While promoting the production, Oliver Ward also let boys know he was reading the delightful At Home by travel writer Bill Bryson.

It is our hope that boys will make reading choices based on staff and students they see as role models, or at least enter even more readily into conversations with them – or each other – about what to read next.
